So a Ukrainian military drone crashed in Finland last week.

Not in Ukraine, not in Russia, not anywhere near the front.

In Finland, a NATO country, near a town called Kouvola.

Which is extraordinary, but also raises the obvious question: what happens when the map is wrong, or the terrain doesn't match what the drone expects?

If a fully autonomous system kills civilians, who goes to The Hague?

The general who deployed it?

They're fighting for survival with massively inferior conventional forces.

The drones are partly a necessity born out of desperation.

What's your read on why this drone ended up in Finland?

Well, there are basically three hypotheses.

It potentially defeats the safety mechanisms too.

The drone doesn't know it's lost, so it never calls for help.

There's a concept in systems engineering called a single point of failure, and it sounds like GPS has become exactly that for a whole generation of weapons systems.

One vulnerability, one exploit, and the whole thing unravels.

The Geneva Conventions weren't written for a world where a civilian communications company provides the tactical backbone of a national army.

I keep coming back to the Finland incident as a kind of accidental stress test.

The system failed, the drone got lost, it crossed an international border, it crashed in a city.

And the international response was, essentially, a diplomatic note and some careful language about investigations.

And that gap, as far as I can tell from history, is exactly where the dangerous accidents happen.
