So, yesterday was a bad day for the U.S.

Air Force.

An F-15E Strike Eagle, one of the most advanced fighter jets in the American arsenal, got shot down over Iranian airspace.

And then, a few hours later, an A-10 Warthog goes down near the Strait of Hormuz after taking anti-aircraft fire.

Two aircraft in one day.

Octavio ES

To understand what happened, we have to start with a basic question: how does Iran shoot down an F-15E?

Because we're not talking about an outdated plane.

We're talking about a machine that has dominated the skies since the eighties and that had never, ever, been shot down in combat.

Fletcher EN

Right, that's the thing that stopped me.

The F-15's combat record was something like 104 kills, zero losses.

For decades.

It was almost mythological.

Octavio ES

Exactamente.

Exactly.

And that's what makes this shootdown so significant, not just militarily but technologically.

Iran has spent years building an air defense system that combines Russian equipment, like the S-300, with domestically developed systems like the Bavar-373, which is basically their version of the S-400.

Fletcher EN

I mean, the Bavar-373 is something I'd been reading about but hadn't taken as seriously as maybe I should have.

Iran unveiled it in 2019 and there was a lot of skepticism in Western defense circles.

The thinking was, basically, how capable can a domestically built Iranian system really be?

Octavio ES

That skepticism has historical roots, of course.

During the Gulf War in 1991, the Iraqi air force was destroyed almost without resistance.

And for decades, American air superiority seemed like an absolute, unquestionable fact.

But the world has changed enormously since then.

Fletcher EN

Look, the war in Ukraine is the obvious reference point here.

We watched Russian air defenses, even outdated Soviet-era systems, take down some very capable aircraft.

The lesson was supposed to be that dense, layered air defense works.

Iran clearly paid attention.

Octavio ES

Sí, y no solo observaron.

Yes, and not just observing.

According to analysts, Iran has created what militaries call an Integrated Air Defense System, or IADS.

It's not a single system but a combination of radars, long-range missiles, short-range missiles, and anti-aircraft artillery working together, covering different altitudes and distances.

Fletcher EN

And the F-15E, for all its capabilities, is not a stealth aircraft.

It's enormously capable but it has a significant radar cross-section.

You can see it coming.

Octavio ES

And there is the heart of the technological problem.

Stealth has become the decisive factor in modern combat aviation.

El F-22 y el F-35 existen precisamente por eso.

The F-22 and the F-35 exist precisely because of this.

The F-15E is extraordinary, but it belongs to a previous generation, designed for a type of war that is no longer the one being fought.

Fletcher EN

Here's what gets me, though.

The two crew members.

One has been rescued, one is still missing as of the reporting we have.

And Iran's state media put out a call for citizens to help capture American pilots.

That is a medieval level of information warfare layered on top of a very high-tech conflict.

Octavio ES

Mira, eso no es nuevo.

That's not new.

During the Vietnam War, North Korea and China offered similar rewards for American pilots.

Propaganda and technology have always coexisted in war.

But you're right about one thing: the combination of hypersonic missiles and social media messages searching for downed pilots is quite surreal.

Fletcher EN

Now, the A-10.

This one is almost harder to process because the A-10 Warthog is a completely different kind of aircraft.

It's slow, it flies low, it's designed for close air support.

Why is it operating near the Strait of Hormuz at all?

Octavio ES

The A-10 is legendary for its resilience.

It is literally designed to absorb damage and keep flying.

It has a titanium-armored cockpit, it can fly with one engine, with half its tail destroyed.

Pilots call it the Warthog, the warty pig, with great affection.

Fletcher EN

Right, and yet it still went down.

The pilot ejected and was rescued, thankfully.

But the A-10 being vulnerable here tells you something about the density of Iranian anti-aircraft coverage in that region.

Octavio ES

Exacto.

Exactly.

And on top of that, during the search and rescue operation for the F-15E pilots, two American military helicopters were hit by small arms fire.

Not by sophisticated missiles, but by rifles.

Three distinct types of threat in one day: long-range surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft artillery, and infantry fire.

Fletcher EN

That layered threat picture is something military analysts have been warning about for years.

You beat the sophisticated systems and then you're still vulnerable to a guy with a rifle on a hilltop.

Octavio ES

This leads us to a deeper question: does crewed aviation have a future in high-intensity conflicts?

Because if the most capable aircraft of its generation, the F-15E, can be shot down over a country without free access to the international arms market, what happens with less advanced aircraft?

Fletcher EN

So this is the conversation the Pentagon has been having internally, loudly, for the last decade.

The F-35 program, which cost about 1.7 trillion dollars total over its lifetime, was supposed to be the answer.

Stealth plus sensors plus networking.

But there are only so many F-35s.

Octavio ES

And here appears the most interesting debate from a technological perspective.

Drones, unmanned vehicles, are changing the entire logic of air combat.

We've already seen it in Ukraine, in Nagorno-Karabakh.

A cheap drone can saturate an expensive air defense system, and that completely changes the economic equation of war.

Fletcher EN

The extraordinary thing is that Iran used exactly that strategy against the UAE yesterday, right?

Eighteen ballistic missiles, four cruise missiles, forty-seven drones.

The drones aren't there to destroy things necessarily.

They're there to overwhelm the interceptors and drain the magazines.

Octavio ES

Yes, and that is what analysts call saturation.

You launch fifty projectiles knowing not all will get through, but also knowing that the interceptors cost far more than the attackers.

A Patriot missile costs between three and four million dollars.

An Iranian Shahed-type drone can cost twenty thousand.

La aritmética no favorece al defensor.

The arithmetic does not favor the defender.

Fletcher EN

I spent some time in Bahrain back in 2011 and the U.S.

Fifth Fleet presence there felt, I don't know, permanent.

Untouchable.

The idea that Iranian drones and missiles are now routinely threatening that entire region is a genuinely historic shift.

Octavio ES

Iran has spent decades preparing for exactly this scenario.

After the United States destroyed the Iraqi air force in a matter of hours in 1991, the Iranians took note and decided they could never compete with America in the air conventionally.

So they invested in ballistic missiles, drones, air defense systems.

En la guerra asimétrica.

In asymmetric warfare.

Fletcher EN

No, you're absolutely right about that.

The 1991 Gulf War was the pivotal moment for every country watching.

It said: don't fight America on America's terms.

Find a different game.

Octavio ES

Y China lo aprendió también.

And China learned it too.

Y Corea del Norte.

And North Korea.

Y Rusia ya lo sabía.

And Russia already knew it.

The proliferation of missile technology and low-cost drones has democratized, if one can use that word, the ability to threaten major air powers.

What once required a massive military industry can now be done in a garage with cheap electronic components.

Fletcher EN

So let's talk about the search and rescue operation specifically, because there's a technology story there too.

When a pilot goes down over enemy territory, you're deploying a set of tools: personal locator beacons, encrypted communications, combat search and rescue helicopters.

And two of those helicopters got hit.

Octavio ES

The rescue of downed pilots is one of the most dangerous military missions that exists.

In Vietnam, the Americans lost many more aircraft trying to rescue pilots than the number of pilots originally shot down.

Es una espiral de riesgo.

It's a spiral of risk.

But abandoning a pilot is unthinkable politically, morally, and in terms of troop morale.

Fletcher EN

There's a reason the code is: no one gets left behind.

It's not just sentiment.

It's a contract.

If pilots believe there's a serious rescue effort, they fly the mission.

Take that away and you have a morale problem that cascades.

Octavio ES

The technology of rescue has advanced enormously.

Modern survival suits, personal locator beacons, encrypted communication systems that allow a pilot on the ground to communicate with aircraft thousands of meters above.

But all of that is useless if the terrain is too controlled by the enemy.

Fletcher EN

So here's a bigger question this raises.

If you're the Air Force right now, looking at two crewed aircraft lost in one day, do you accelerate the shift toward unmanned systems?

Is this the moment that tips the argument?

Octavio ES

That question has been debated since the first Predator drone fired a missile in Afghanistan in 2001.

But there is enormous resistance within air forces everywhere to abandoning the crewed aircraft.

It's cultural, it's institutional, and in some ways also technological: human pilots still make better decisions in highly ambiguous situations.

Fletcher EN

Though there are people in Silicon Valley who would challenge that quite aggressively.

The argument for autonomous combat aircraft is getting louder.

Octavio ES

Yes, and here appears an enormous ethical problem.

If an autonomous aircraft kills civilians, who is responsible?

¿El programador?

The programmer?

¿El general que lanzó la misión?

The general who launched the mission?

¿La empresa que fabricó el sistema?

The company that built the system?

International humanitarian law is completely unprepared to answer that question.

Fletcher EN

And that's before you get into the question of hacking.

An autonomous combat aircraft is, at some level, a very expensive computer.

And computers can be compromised.

Octavio ES

In 2011 the Iranians captured an American RQ-170 drone almost intact, allegedly by interfering with its GPS system.

The Americans denied it, but the drone was there, on Iranian soil, perfectly preserved.

And the Iranians had been studying its technology for years.

No es paranoia;

That's not paranoia;

es historia reciente.

it's recent history.

Fletcher EN

I remember writing about that at the time.

The photo of Iranian military personnel standing around this enormous intact stealth drone was genuinely shocking.

The Pentagon's response was essentially to ask nicely for it back.

Iran said no.

Octavio ES

And that incident perfectly illustrates the other side of military technology: technological intelligence, what the Americans call TECHINT.

When you shoot down or capture enemy equipment, you learn how it works, you learn its vulnerabilities, and that is sometimes worth more than the tactical victory of the moment.

Fletcher EN

So the wreckage of that F-15E, wherever it is in Iran right now.

That is an intelligence bonanza for Tehran, and probably for Moscow and Beijing too.

Octavio ES

Sin duda.

Without a doubt.

And that explains why the Americans, when they can, destroy their own downed aircraft before the enemy arrives.

Hay protocolos para eso.

There are protocols for that.

But when the aircraft falls in territory controlled by the adversary and rescuing the pilots takes priority, recovery of the equipment comes second.

Fletcher EN

Look, zooming out a little: what does this day tell us about where this conflict is heading technologically?

Because if Iran can take down an F-15E and an A-10 in one day, that changes the strategic calculus for any further air operations.

Octavio ES

What it says is that American air dominance is neither free nor guaranteed over Iranian territory.

That doesn't mean the United States will lose the air war;

they have enormously superior capabilities in terms of stealth aircraft, precision munitions, and electronic warfare.

Fletcher EN

And the American public's tolerance for casualties, for pilots captured, for flag-draped coffins.

That is a political variable that Iran understands perfectly well and is almost certainly calculating.

Octavio ES

That is exactly what I want to emphasize.

Technology in modern war is not only about which weapon shoots down which aircraft.

It's about narratives, public opinion, the political will to keep fighting.

A captured pilot appearing on Iranian television is strategically worth far more than the aircraft that carried him.

Fletcher EN

The information war runs parallel to the kinetic war.

Always has, but the speed of it now.

A clip of a downed American pilot can circle the globe before the Pentagon has finished writing its press statement.

Octavio ES

This episode should make us reflect on something broader: the gap between how we imagine high-tech war and how it actually is.

In the popular imagination, the American military presses a button, launches a precision missile from a thousand kilometers away, and that's it.

The reality is far more chaotic, more expensive, and more human than it appears.

Fletcher EN

I covered the early days of the Iraq War in 2003 and even then, with all that precision technology on display, things went sideways constantly.

The fog of war doesn't lift just because you have better sensors.

Octavio ES

Clausewitz wrote about friction in war two hundred years ago: the idea that everything that seems simple in theory becomes terribly difficult in practice.

Two centuries later, with hypersonic missiles and artificial intelligence, friction is still there.

No ha desaparecido.

It hasn't disappeared.

Solo tiene nuevas formas.

It just has new forms.

Fletcher EN

And two pilots are out there somewhere, one rescued, one still missing.

That's the friction with a human face.

We should probably leave it there, but I don't think either of us is done thinking about this.

Octavio ES

Nunca se termina de pensar en esto.

You never stop thinking about this.

But what we can say clearly is that this day, April 3rd 2026, has already entered the textbooks of military aviation.

El récord invicto del F-15 se acabó.

The F-15's undefeated record is over.

And that changes something in the way the world understands American air power.
