Fletcher EN

Zayn Malik just canceled his entire American tour.

Dublin gone.

Glasgow gone.

Birmingham gone.

Nobody's said why, except that he's in hospital.

Octavio ES

Sí.

Yes.

La noticia es triste.

The news is sad.

Zayn es un artista importante.

Zayn is an important artist.

Fletcher EN

Important is the right word.

And I want to talk about why, because I think there's something here that goes a lot deeper than a canceled tour.

Octavio ES

Claro.

Of course.

El álbum se llama Konnakol.

The album is called Konnakol.

Es muy interesante.

It's very interesting.

Fletcher EN

Right, that's exactly where I want to start.

The album is called Konnakol, and I had to look that up, and when I did I fell down a rabbit hole for about two hours.

Octavio ES

Konnakol es música clásica del sur de India.

Konnakol is classical music from South India.

Es muy antigua.

It's very old.

Fletcher EN

Ancient, actually.

It's a form of vocal percussion, the tradition of using your mouth, syllables, specific sounds, to represent rhythmic patterns that a drummer would play.

And it goes back at least a thousand years in the Carnatic tradition.

Octavio ES

Zayn usa ese nombre para su álbum pop.

Zayn uses that name for his pop album.

Es una decisión importante.

It's a significant choice.

Fletcher EN

It is, and that's a statement.

You don't call your album after a centuries-old South Indian classical tradition by accident.

That's a flag being planted.

Octavio ES

Zayn es británico.

Zayn is British.

Pero su familia es de Pakistán.

But his family is from Pakistan.

Eso es importante.

That matters.

Fletcher EN

Bradford, West Yorkshire.

His father is Pakistani, his mother is of English and Irish descent.

He grew up in a house that was both of those things at once, and he's spent his entire public life navigating what that means.

Octavio ES

En España también hay muchas personas así.

In Spain there are also many people like that.

De dos culturas.

From two cultures.

Fletcher EN

And the UK has a very specific version of this story.

There are roughly four million British South Asians, and for decades the culture around them in pop music was largely invisible.

Zayn changed that.

Octavio ES

One Direction era un grupo muy famoso.

One Direction was a very famous group.

Zayn era el único asiático.

Zayn was the only Asian one.

Fletcher EN

The only South Asian face in the biggest boy band on the planet for a stretch there.

Millions of young British-Pakistani, British-Indian kids watching television and seeing someone who looked like them, in that context, for the first time.

Octavio ES

La representación es muy importante.

Representation matters a lot.

La gente necesita ver su cara.

People need to see their own face.

Fletcher EN

There's a phrase I heard once from a South Asian journalist I worked with in London, years ago.

She said, 'You can't be what you can't see.' And she wasn't talking about Zayn specifically, this was before One Direction even existed, but the principle is the same.

Octavio ES

Zayn deja One Direction en 2015.

Zayn leaves One Direction in 2015.

Después hace música diferente.

After that he makes different music.

Fletcher EN

Very different.

His first solo single, Pillowtalk, went to number one in twenty countries on its release day.

That had basically never happened before.

And the sound was R&B, experimental, much more adult.

He walked away from the formula that had made him famous.

Octavio ES

Es valiente.

That's brave.

El público de One Direction es muy joven.

One Direction's audience is very young.

Fletcher EN

Commercially risky, artistically honest.

And with Konnakol, he's gone further.

Pulling in South Asian classical influences, explicitly.

Not as window dressing, but as the conceptual frame of the whole record.

Octavio ES

La música konnakol usa la voz como instrumento.

Konnakol music uses the voice as an instrument.

Sin guitarra, sin piano.

No guitar, no piano.

Fletcher EN

Pure rhythm through the human voice.

The syllables are non-lexical, meaning they don't have semantic meaning in the way words do, they're phonetic containers for rhythmic information.

Ta, di, ki, ta, ta, ka, di, mi.

Patterns that can get extraordinarily complex.

Octavio ES

¿Cómo conecta eso con la música pop moderna?

How does that connect to modern pop music?

No entiendo bien.

I don't quite understand.

Fletcher EN

That's actually the right question, and I don't think anyone has a clean answer.

But think about what pop music has been doing for thirty years.

Electronic music, hip-hop, they've been obsessed with rhythm, with layering percussion, with voice-as-texture.

Konnakol sits right inside that conversation.

Octavio ES

Sí.

Yes.

Muchos artistas mezclan culturas ahora.

Many artists mix cultures now.

Es normal.

It's normal.

Fletcher EN

Normal now.

But it wasn't always.

There's a long, messy history of Western artists borrowing from non-Western traditions and getting the credit, while the original tradition stays obscure.

The question with Zayn is whether this is different, and I think it might be.

Octavio ES

Porque Zayn tiene esa cultura en su familia.

Because Zayn has that culture in his family.

No es un turista.

He's not a tourist.

Fletcher EN

He has skin in the game, literally.

The South Asian musical heritage is his heritage.

He's not visiting it from the outside.

That changes the nature of what borrowing means here.

Octavio ES

Pero también: él está en hospital ahora.

But also: he is in hospital right now.

Las giras son muy difíciles.

Tours are very hard.

Fletcher EN

Hard is an understatement.

A major international tour is, physically and psychologically, brutal.

Three, four hundred shows over eighteen months, different time zones every few days, no consistent sleep, the same performance hundreds of times.

Octavio ES

Zayn habla de su salud mental muchas veces.

Zayn talks about his mental health many times.

Es honesto.

He is honest.

Fletcher EN

He pulled out of a headline slot at Reading Festival back in 2016 because of severe anxiety.

He's written about it.

He's been more public about that than almost anyone at his level of fame at the time.

Which took real nerve.

Octavio ES

En la música, hablar de problemas de salud es difícil.

In music, talking about health problems is difficult.

La gente no acepta.

People don't always accept it.

Fletcher EN

There's still a version of the music industry that treats artists as output machines.

You signed the contract, you show up, you perform.

The idea that the person inside the contract might be struggling is inconvenient.

The economics don't want to hear it.

Octavio ES

Sí.

Yes.

El concierto cuesta mucho dinero.

The concert costs a lot of money.

Los fans compran entradas.

Fans buy tickets.

Fletcher EN

Real money, real disappointment.

I'm not minimizing that.

But there's something worth sitting with here, which is that we've built an entertainment economy where a human being's health is measured against ticket revenue, and we treat the ticket revenue as the more serious concern.

Octavio ES

La gente quiere ver a Zayn cantar.

People want to see Zayn sing.

Pero Zayn necesita descansar.

But Zayn needs to rest.

Fletcher EN

And those two things are both true, and they're in conflict, and I don't think the industry has figured out what to do with that tension yet.

What I do know is that the album, the fact that it exists and it's called what it's called, that's not nothing.

Octavio ES

El nombre del álbum es una declaración.

The album name is a declaration.

Dice: yo soy esto.

It says: I am this.

Fletcher EN

Precisely.

A kid from Bradford telling the global pop market: here is where I come from, here is what that means musically, and you're going to learn the word Konnakol whether you wanted to or not.

That's a particular kind of power.

Octavio ES

Oye, Fletcher.

Hey, Fletcher.

Tú dices 'gira' antes.

You said 'gira' earlier.

La gira de Zayn.

Zayn's tour.

Fletcher EN

I did, yeah.

La gira.

Tour.

Which, now that you're pointing at it, is a word I've heard a dozen times but never actually thought about.

Octavio ES

Gira viene de girar.

Gira comes from girar.

Girar significa dar vueltas.

Girar means to turn or go around.

La gira da vueltas por el mundo.

A tour goes around the world.

Fletcher EN

Oh, that's elegant.

The tour literally turns, it rotates through cities and countries.

English borrows the word from French, 'tour,' same root, Latin tornare, the lathe that spins.

We kept the same metaphor without noticing it.

Octavio ES

Sí.

Yes.

Y también: el planeta gira.

And also: the planet turns.

El tiempo gira.

Time turns.

Todo gira.

Everything turns.

Fletcher EN

Everything turns.

Including, hopefully, Zayn's health.

Get well soon, wherever you are.

And listeners, next time you hear someone say 'la gira,' picture the whole thing spinning through the cities on its axis.

That's a word that's earned its metaphor.
