A passenger welfare group in Bangladesh just published their April tally, and I've been staring at it all morning trying to get my head around the scale.

I spent time in Dhaka in the early 2000s on a piece about the garment industry, and the traffic was genuinely unlike anything I'd seen, and I'd reported from Jakarta and Cairo.

Rickshaws, CNGs, buses with people on the roof, trucks with no functioning brake lights.

It's one of the most densely populated countries on earth, which means you have enormous numbers of people competing for road space that was never designed to handle them.

The political economy of transport safety is almost always the same: the people who profit from the status quo are organized, and the people who die from it aren't.

The World Bank has estimated that road traffic injuries cost low and middle-income countries between one and three percent of GDP annually.

So you're not just talking about human tragedy;

the economic argument for fixing this is overwhelming.

Most of these statistics I've seen are road-only.

The waterways component is something specific to Bangladesh, given the geography.

These aren't wealthy countries.

The context matters here.

The political situation is genuinely complicated.

You had the student uprising in 2024 that toppled Sheikh Hasina, an interim government under Muhammad Yunus, and a country trying to stabilize while also dealing with the economic spillover from the Iran war affecting fuel costs and supply chains.

Road safety is probably item thirty on the priority list.

And that is precisely what makes these figures so desolating.

The health system point is one I want to linger on.

Because road deaths aren't just the deaths.

There are 1,279 injured people from April alone, and a significant portion of those will have serious injuries, spinal damage, traumatic brain injury, amputations.

And Bangladesh's trauma care system is not equipped to handle that load.

It multiplies out in ways that are almost impossible to fully account for.

There's a phrase you used earlier that I've been meaning to ask about.

You said "se diluyeron" when you were describing what happened to the 2018 reforms.

I know "diluir" is to dilute, but using it for political reforms, that's not a usage I'd have come up with on my own.

Octavio ES

Es una metáfora muy común en español cuando hablamos de cosas que pierden fuerza o consistencia gradualmente, sin un momento concreto en que desaparecen.

It's a very common metaphor in Spanish when we talk about things that gradually lose force or substance, without a specific moment when they disappear.

"Las reformas se diluyeron" significa que no hubo una decisión de cancelarlas, simplemente fueron perdiendo sustancia hasta que no quedaba casi nada.

'Las reformas se diluyeron' means there was no decision to cancel them, they simply kept losing substance until almost nothing remained.

Puedes decir también que una idea se diluye en un debate, o que el entusiasmo se diluyó con el tiempo.

You can also say that an idea dilutes in a debate, or that enthusiasm faded over time.

So it's the same root as diluting a solution in chemistry, but extended to anything that loses its concentration.

That's actually a more precise word than anything I'd reach for in English.

We'd say "watered down" which is the same metaphor, but "diluyeron" feels cleaner somehow.

Octavio ES

"Watered down" es exactamente el equivalente, sí.

'Watered down' is exactly the equivalent, yes.

Y lo que me parece bonito de estas metáforas líquidas en español es que hay toda una familia de ellas: algo puede "diluirse", puede "evaporarse", puede "desvanecerse".

And what I find beautiful about these liquid metaphors in Spanish is that there's a whole family of them: something can 'diluirse', can 'evaporarse', can 'desvanecerse'.

Cada una tiene un matiz distinto.

Each has a different nuance.

"Diluirse" implica que la sustancia sigue ahí, pero tan dispersa que ya no tiene efecto.
