So this week a U.S.

court sentenced a woman called Jasveen Sangha to fifteen years in prison.

She supplied the ketamine that killed Matthew Perry in 2023.

And look, I know this sounds like a celebrity crime story, but I think it's actually something much bigger than that.

But I want to start with what happened in court this week, because the details are genuinely disturbing.

Ketamine is a real medical drug, used as an anesthetic in hospitals, actually used in war zones, including places I've been.

It's legal, it's prescribed.

But in high doses, outside a medical setting, it can stop you breathing.

It's also become a party drug and, more recently, a treatment for severe depression.

He did, and that's where this gets complicated.

Perry had been treated with ketamine therapy, which is legitimate.

But investigators found that in the months before his death, he was also buying it illegally, in enormous quantities, from a network of suppliers.

Sangha, the woman sentenced this week, was one of them.

They called her the ketamine queen.

I interviewed a lot of famous people during my years as a correspondent, politicians mostly, but some cultural figures too.

And there's a specific kind of loneliness that comes with being recognized everywhere but actually known by almost nobody.

It's a paradox.

And that myth has consequences.

It shapes how young artists think about themselves.

Universal, and getting worse, I'd argue.

Because now with Instagram and TikTok, you can become famous without any of the traditional protections, no studio, no management, no team around you.

You can go from nobody to a million followers in three weeks, completely unprepared for what that does to you psychologically.

Young people today want to be famous on the internet.

It's a different life.

A completely different life.

Right, so, back to the court case.

Because I think what happened this week also matters beyond Perry specifically.

The judge sentenced doctors as part of this.

And that raises a question about how American culture treats healthcare for wealthy people versus everyone else.

And it exposes something that people who aren't American sometimes find shocking.

I mean, it genuinely does.

When healthcare is universal, there's less space for this kind of two-tier corruption.

I'm not saying Spain has no problems with this, but the structural incentive is different.

A doctor in a public system doesn't profit directly from prescribing you more.

But it is more fair.

No, you're absolutely right about that.

More fair is the right way to put it.

And I think this is where the Perry story connects to something much larger about how American culture has, for decades, exported this image of itself as a place where anything is possible if you have enough money.

And that includes buying your way around the rules.

The dream and the nightmare, side by side.

Here's what gets me about Friends specifically.

The show was about six people in New York, young, beautiful, broke, supposedly, living in apartments none of them could actually afford.

And that fantasy became the aspirational image of an entire generation worldwide.

Impossible in New York too, honestly.

The writers admitted the whole premise was absurd even then.

And maybe it's built into the celebrity culture it created around its stars.

The reality of Perry's life versus the gleaming comedy he performed every week.
