Picture this: a missile launched from Yemen, crossing hundreds of kilometers of airspace, aimed at an oil facility in Saudi Arabia, and what stops it is a battery operated by Greek soldiers.
That is the story I want to talk about today.

It's a very strange story.
Yesterday, the Houthis fired ballistic missiles at Aramco facilities in Yanbu and Jizan, on the western coast of Saudi Arabia.
A Patriot battery, operated by the Greek military, intercepted them.
Both missiles destroyed in the air.
No damage to the facilities.

They do.
And most of those attacks, honestly, don't make major headlines outside of specialist coverage.
But this one caught my attention for a different reason.
Greek soldiers.
In Saudi Arabia.
Firing an American missile system.
At a Yemeni weapon built with Iranian technology.
That's five countries in one sentence.
Cinco países, sí.
Five countries, yes.

Let's start with the hardware, because I think a lot of people hear 'Patriot missile' and have a vague memory of it from the Gulf War, and that's about it.
Octavio, do you know much about how this system actually works?

That's exactly right, and it's the key distinction.
The Patriot, which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept of Target, is a surface-to-air missile system.
Its entire purpose is to find an incoming threat and destroy it before it reaches its target.
It doesn't go looking for a fight.
It waits for one to come to it.

And then the math has to happen very, very fast.
A ballistic missile traveling at several times the speed of sound gives the Patriot system something like forty seconds from detection to intercept, depending on range.
In those forty seconds, the radar has to track the target, the system has to calculate a firing solution, and then the interceptor missile has to fly out and hit something moving at Mach 5 or faster.

And for a long time, most serious military analysts were deeply skeptical that it was even physically achievable in real battlefield conditions.

Then the MIT analysis came out.

The Pentagon disputed his findings, but they never fully discredited them either.

Because that's what I find genuinely puzzling.
Greece is a NATO member, and NATO has been deploying Patriot batteries around the Middle East as part of the broader coalition effort.
But there's something almost surreal about Greek soldiers manning an air defense position somewhere in western Saudi Arabia.

And this is where the technology story gets really interesting to me.
Because the Houthi missile program is not what it was five years ago.

The Burkan series of missiles, for instance, draws heavily on the Iranian Qiam ballistic missile design.
They can now manufacture components inside Yemen, which makes it much harder to disrupt supply by interdicting shipments.

That's the trajectory, and it's one of the consistent patterns you see across modern conflict.
Insurgent and proxy forces start with crude, improvised weapons.

The Houthis in 2026 are a fundamentally more capable missile power than the Houthis in 2015 when the Saudi-led intervention began.

It has the same basic logic as cybersecurity, actually, offense and defense constantly leapfrogging each other.

You do not have to be a defense economist to see the problem with that math.

But none of them are ready to replace Patriot yet.

It's an economic shock that ripples through fuel prices, through inflation, through supply chains that are already stressed from years of disruption.

tangle, shows no sign of resolving.
