Well look, I’m Fletcher Haines, semi-retired journalist from Austin, Texas.

Octavio ES

And I am Octavio Solana, writer and columnist from Madrid, although I've lived some time in London, Buenos Aires, and Mexico City.

Fletcher EN

We met, well, the first time, I was digging into press freedom in post-crisis Spain.

Octavio ES

Exacto, me entrevistó para un reportaje que terminó siendo tres horas de conversación;

Exactly, he interviewed me for a report that ended up being a three-hour conversation;

later we ended up in a bar in Malasaña and to this day we haven’t stopped arguing.

Fletcher EN

Right, so here’s the thing — I started this podcast because my daughter married a guy from Madrid, and I realized I was 'muy embarazado' at family dinners.

Octavio ES

No, no, espera...

No, no, wait...

no decías 'muy embarazado' que significa 'very pregnant'?

you said 'muy embarazado' which means 'very pregnant'?

You meant 'avergonzado', which means embarrassed, okay?

Fletcher EN

[laughs] Yeah, that one is still a favorite joke at your mom’s house.

Octavio ES

But that’s exactly what we want: real conversations where mistakes are the best lessons.

Fletcher EN

The extraordinary thing is how our debates — about politics, food, culture — turned out to be the best language lesson either of us had experienced.

Octavio ES

Of course, because the truth is that real conversation, with doubts, interruptions and partial agreements, is infinitely more useful than a boring textbook.

Fletcher EN

I mean, there’s no classroom here — just two friends talking about whatever’s on our minds, and you get to eavesdrop.

Octavio ES

And while we argue, we’ll be explaining expressions, strange words and some stories that only insiders know.

Fletcher EN

Plus, I’ll probably put ice in my wine at some point — and Octavio will remind me why that’s a crime.

Octavio ES

It’s just that wine deserves respect, Fletcher, not an ice cube that ruins it.

Fletcher EN

Well look, that’s the dynamic: me bringing the outsider’s curiosity, Octavio bringing the insider’s authority.

Octavio ES

And even though we sometimes don’t agree — about paella or tortilla, for example — we always respect each other’s intelligence.

Fletcher EN

Exactly.

So if you’re ready for an honest, lively conversation in Spanish and English, where you learn through real talk, welcome to Twilingua.

Octavio ES

Get ready for laughs, mistakes and above all, lots of passion for the language and culture.

Fletcher EN

Let’s start this adventure.
